HOW TO PLAY

Basic play

Each player or team chooses a set of coloured markers. Players or teams move in turn, placing one of their markers in an empty square on one of the three playing boards. The first player to get three of their markers in a straight or diagonal row in the 3D playing area, wins (there are 49 ways this can be done!). To check that you have won, you should be able to draw an imaginary straight or diagonal line through your three winning markers.

Tip: For an even more challenging game when playing with two players, try one of the following (see details below): Full House; the 4 player game for 2 players; the 3 player game for 2 players or using one of the Fair Play rules.

Advanced play (variations to really get the brain going!):

  • Full house:The player or team with the most 3’s in a row at the end of each game (when all the squares have been filled) wins.
  • Reversal: The first player with 3 in a row loses the game (the reverse of a basic game).
  • Handicapping: Better players can be handicapped to only a few markers per game (say 4 or 5) or limited to straight or diagonal wins only.
  • Solo: 1 player chooses 2 or more sets of coloured markers, playing against him/herself.
  • Incredible edible: Players use coloured sweets (say lifesavers, M & M,’s, super C’s, winegums or smarties) instead of the regular coloured markers. The winner gets to keep (and eat) all the sweets left on the board!
  • Quick think: Players have only an instant (say 2 to 5 seconds) to make each move. Too slow and you lose your turn!
  • Take your pick: Players pick markers randomly each turn from a hidden pile, having no idea which colour they'll pick next! The first player with 3 in a row in any colour wins.
  • Time's up!: Set a time limit for each game (say 3 minutes). If there are no winners when the time is up, the game starts again.
  • 4 by 2 (a 4 player game for 2 players!): Player 1 chooses 2 sets of coloured markers  (say blue and orange) and player 2 does the same (say red and yellow). Player 1 moves first by placing his/her first colour (blue) in an empty square. Player 2 then moves by placing his/her first colour (red) in an empty square. Player 1 then moves by placing his/her second colour (orange) in an empty square. Player 2 then moves by placing his/her second colour (yellow) in an empty square. This sequence repeats itself until a player gets 3 in a row with either of their 2 colours, winning the game. N.B. In this example, player 1 needs 3 blues or 3 oranges in a row to win; player 2 needs 3 reds or 3 yellows in a row to win.
  • 3 by 2 (a 3 player game for 2 players!): Player 1 chooses a set of coloured markers (say blue) and player 2 does the same (say yellow). Players also share a third set of coloured markers (say orange). Player 1 moves first by placing his/her first colour (blue) in an empty square. Player 2 then moves by placing his/her first colour (yellow) in an empty square. Player 1 then moves by placing his/her shared marker (orange) in an empty square. Player 2 then moves by placing his/her shared marker (also orange) in an empty square. This sequence repeats itself until one player gets 3 in a row with their own coloured markers or the shared coloured marker, winning the game.   In  this  example,  player  1 needs 3 blues or 3 oranges in a row to win;  player 2 needs 3 yellows or 3 oranges in a row to win.

Fair play (if someone uses the centre square on the middle playing board all the time!):

·        If player 1 uses the centre square on the middle playing board on their first move, they lose their next move.

·        Players can only use the centre square on the middle playing board on their second move.

·        Any player using the centre square on the middle playing board on their first move must get two 3’s in a row to win instead of 1.

·        A player can skip their current move and remove 1 of their opponent’s markers from the board instead. Each player can only do this once per game.

·        In a 2 player game, if a player uses the centre square on the middle playing board on their first move, their opponents wins a blocker (a coloured marker not being used by either player). The blocker can be played just like a normal marker at any time during the game, before or after a regular move.

* You can even create your very own game by mixing and matching any of the basic rules and variations! Have fun…
